Obituary

Oliver Lee Brown Sr., affectionately known as "Pop", "Papa," and  "GPa," to his children and grandchildren and "Brown" to his beloved late wife Dora, passed from this life to eternal glory on April 20, 2025, in Florence, South Carolina. He was 81 years young, and even on his last days, he was "kicking a leg."

Born July 10, 1943, in Darlington, SC, Oliver was one of ten children raised on a farm where he learned the value of hard work, loyalty, and the power of a well-timed joke…usually. He was educated in the Darlington County school system and remained a proud native son of Darlington and Florence for all of his life.

A man of grit, craftsmanship, and quiet excellence, Oliver dedicated his life to building things that lasted. As a general contractor in both residential and commercial construction, his hands helped shape homes and businesses across the region—but his proudest build was the house he designed and constructed for his family, where he lived until his final breath.

Oliver was baptized in Jesus' name. He was a dedicated member of Greater Gethsemane Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, faithfully singing with the Men's Choir, welcoming guests at the door as they entered the sanctuary or serving alongside his beloved Dora on Team 6. Together, they were a fixture of love, faith, and hospitality—always hosting family or loved ones and then waving them off from the porch until they could no longer be seen. Oliver carried on that tradition with his children even after Dora's passing, a testament to the depth of his devotion.

Oliver was many things—a dependable father, a doting grandpa, a sharp pool player, a skilled fisherman, and the best-dressed man you've ever seen on Sundays, always stepping out in his suit like he had somewhere important to be—even if it was just going to church, IGA, and back home after. When asked how he was, his trademark response was, "I'm kicking a leg but not high." And when it was time to hang up the phone, you could count on hearing, "I reckon I love you a little bit."

He is survived by his devoted son and daughter-in-law, Oliver Lee Brown Jr. and Audrey Brown; granddaughters Brittany Brown and Brooke Brown (Sean) Calloway; loving sister Daisy Mae Moses; honorary daughter Elaine Gregg; special daughter Tamara Ford; goddaughters Shametra Meyers and Isla Smith; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends—each one touched by his wit, his stories, and his unwavering presence.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife Dora Boston Brown, parents George Mack Brown and Luray Backus Brown, eight siblings George Mack, Nathaniel, Serena, Diana "Dee", Bernice, Willie "Son", Randolph, and Anthony Brown.

To know Oliver was to know dependability, laughter, and love rooted in faith. He was a man of his word—unless he didn't want to do it—and   someone whose legacy is built not just in wood and nails, but in memories, tradition, and joy.
