Obituary

Edward Charles Hugee, Charles as he was known, was born in Pamplico, SC to Stephen Thomas Hugee and Lillie Mae Holmes. At the age of five years old, his father died in a work related  accident. His mother moved to Effingham where they resided with her mother Lessie. Charles  and his brother Nathaniel Ellis lived together until Nathaniel got married.


Charles attended and graduated from Gibbs school in Pamplico. He attended Florence-Darlington Technical College for one year. He was trained in the trade of brick masonry.


Growing up with his mother, Charles joined Mt. Rona where he served on the Jr. Usher Board. At the age of twenty he left South Carolina to follow his trade and landed in Norfolk, VA. He lived there for four years. He returned home in 1977, married and a daughter was born in 1978. He relocated to Washington, DC, returned to South Carolina in 1991 and in 1992 relocated to New York. In 1992, he met his wife Olivia. They dated for several years while she completed her education, and on December 12, 1998 they were united in holy matrimony. He joined St. Paul's Baptist Church and was an active member in their Drama department. Charles retired in 2019 and come home where his wife Olivia and granddaughter Zoe (the apple of his eye) resided. He lived a good life and loved to read the bible.


He was preceded in death by his parents, grandmother, brother Nathaniel Ellis, sister Annie Mae Sanders.


He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his wife Olivia;  daughter Sheria Pooler from North Carolina; sons John (Jill) Johnson, Troy Gates and Brandon Gates; granddaughters Sade Johnson, Jenee Johnson, Kayla Gates, Kimberly Gates, Naomi Gates; one grandson Tyrek Glover; one sister   Alice Robinson, sisters-in-law Mary Ellis, Deborah Farrell, Betty (Harold) Alder,  Jocelyn, Orivia Smith, Theresa (Mike) Pope, brothers-in-law Ronald (Myrna) Perine and Walter Perine; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.


Charles was a generous man with his time, talents, always willing to help others to show and tell of God's goodness through his actions.
