Obituary

Johnny L. Gilchrist departed this earthly life on Sunday, May 21, 2023 surrounded by his loving family in Myrtle Beach, SC. He was born in Marion County, SC on January 16, 1946, to the late Hezekiah and Nora Jane Gilchrist as the seventh child born to this union.


Johnny was educated in the Marion County public school  system and graduated from Palmetto High School. He attended Alamance Technical Institute and earned an electrical engineering degree.


During his free time, he enjoyed staying in touch with family and friends near and far by texting them daily. He also had a love for fishing, racing and working on cars, traveling and  being the family's weatherman. Nothing entertained him more than watching a good episode of Maury, the Wendy Williams show, and his beloved football teams; the Philadelphia Eagles and Clemson Tigers.


As a young man, Johnny enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War and shortly after, he married his loving wife of 54 years, Annie C. Gilchrist. They settled in Burlington, NC and soon he was working at General Electric which he retired after 33 years. Once retired, he decided to relocate to continue enjoying life beachside in Myrtle Beach, SC. Johnny, never met a stranger and was well respected by neighbors and coworkers.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers; James Peter Gilchrist Sr., Raymond Gilchrist, Ernest Gilchrist, Lawrence Gilchrist, Samuel Gilchrist, his sisters; Shirley Reaves, Loretta Ingram and Thalia Dukes.


He leaves to cherish precious memories; a devoted wife, Annie C. Gilchrist; three daughters, Sonya Gilchrist of Myrtle Beach, SC, Michele Williams and Christine Sampson-Clark both of Trenton NJ; two sons, Johnny L Gilchrist Jr. of  Myrtle Beach, SC, and Michael (Lavoskia) Torain of  Chesapeake VA; three sisters, Linda Gilchrist, Ella Davis both of Jersey City, NJ and Edna Lee Featherstone of Mullins, SC; seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
