Maxine
Gasque
January 28, 1947 – January 5, 2026
Our beloved Maxine Gasque was born January 28, 1947 to the late Dr. Macy and Mrs. Jannie Mae Gasque. She entered into eternal rest on January 5, 2026.
At an early age, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and joined St. Mark AME Church.
She matriculated through the public schools of Florence County, where she later earned her vocation in nursing. Maxine was widely known as a loving, nurturing, and a joyful woman. Her demeanor could best be described through Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s sermon, "The Drum Major Instinct." In that she possessed a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.
Maxine was deeply committed to her church and community, where service was not just an obligation but her passion. She found great joy in serving Christ, her church, and her community. As an avid student of the Bible, she had a deep thirst for God's Word and delighted in attending both Sunday School and Bible Study. Her love for service knew no boundaries. Generosity was a defining trait she consistently displayed—whether through sharing her resources, delivering meals to those in need, or lovingly visiting and caring for the sick, shut-ins, and downtrodden. Maxine was also an excellent chef who delighted family and friends with her delicious dishes. Her nurturing spirit and skill-set were especially fitting for her work as a hospice caregiver, a role she fulfilled with great compassion and conviction. Among the many honors and recognitions, she has received, her notable servant leadership recently earned her the honored title of "Torch Lighter" in the Women's Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Kingsburg Chapter #182 Order of The Eastern Star and affiliated with the Council on Aging.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Macy and Mrs. Jannie Mae Gasque, her sisters and brother, Celestine, Mary, and Raleigh, Jr., her beloved daughter Pamela Gause, and her great-grandson Dray.
She deeply loved her children, Sonya Bartell and Celeste Johnson. She also shared a loving bond with her sons-in-law, Robert Gause, Adrian Johnson and George Bartell. She idolized her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jaborris Gasque, Robert Gause, Jr., Patreil (Kyoko) Gause, Gitory Bartell, Raymond Gause, Jasmine Johnson, Lauryn Johnson, and Jalen Johnson; great grandchildren, Trinity, Madison, Kaylee, Raysona, Riley, Patreil, Jr. and Kashton. She adored her siblings, Francine Gasque, Judge Jackie (Dr. Ken) Jenkins, Gwen Gasque-Crawford, Macy Gasque, Jr. MSG, Jan Thompson, and Dr. James Winford Gasque, MD. Maxine cherished her nephews and nieces, Kendrick (Shanika) Jenkins, Robyn Thompson, Martell (Leon) Sturkey, Manez Covington, Rob (Elise) Thompson, Jillion Crawford, Macy Gasque III, Jamie Gasque, and Mario Covington. Beyond these loved ones mourning, her passing is a great loss to many grand nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
