Pastor Bennie
King Jr.
June 14, 1945 – May 24, 2026
Reverend Bennie King, Jr. was born on June 14, 1945 in Mullins, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Bennie King, Sr. and Lucille Howard King. He entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Brown.
Reverend King attended the public schools of Florence County where he graduated from Wilson High School, class of 1963. He served four years active duty in the United States Army as well as serving in the South Carolina National Guard. He attended Florence-Darlington Technical College majoring in Criminal Justice, and he was a 1996 graduate of Morris College School of Religion with a Bachelor of Theology.
Pastor King had a tremendous zeal for living. He was joyful, caring, loving and kind. He loved to laugh! He cultivated a great love for music, having a natural talent and ability to create music, he sung with various quartet groups such as the Gospel Serenaders in which he was one of the lead singers who rearranged "Pass Me Not." He also sang with The Golden Stars. He played several instruments such as bass lead guitar, saxophone, piano and drums.
Later in life, he joined Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Florence, SC and was baptized under the leadership of Reverend C.B. Black, Jr. He served as the church musician for nineteen years until he received the call to join the Ministry. He preached his initial sermon in 1989. He was ordained and installed as Pastor in February 1990, where he remained for the past 36 years until his demise. Under his leadership and visionary guidance, he transitioned the church from holding services two Sundays a month to a full, vibrant schedule every Sunday every month. A wise administrator, he established the church official by-laws and spearheaded the major renovation of the new sanctuary to house the growing congregation. Pastor King took great pride in ordaining and establishing many church ministers, and he deeply cherished the partnership of his dedicated ministerial staff, who co-labored alongside him to serve the flock and advance the kingdom of God. Under his leadership, the first phase of the following additions was added: the Educational Wing and the Fellowship Hall. The second phase of his vision was that he organized and led the construction of the new church sanctuary. On October 26, 2024, the church Commemorated a season of renewal. Pastor King officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated sanctuary, symbolizing a fresh chapter for the ministry as it stands entirely free of debt. His legacy is woven into the very fabric of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, where he baptized generations, married couples, comforted the bereaved, and faithfully preached the Word of God every Sunday.
