Sarah
Muldrow
October 25, 1946 – May 6, 2026
Sarah Rether Muldrow was a woman of grace, strength, compassion, and quiet determination whose life left a lasting imprint on everyone blessed to know her. Born on October 25, 1946, in Florence County, SC, Sarah was the eldest daughter of the late Ella Mae Muldrow-McDaniel, Reynolds Muldrow and James McDaniel. Throughout her life, she exemplified resilience, service, faith and love for family and community.
Sarah was educated in the Florence County school system and proudly graduated in 1964 from Wilson High School. She later attended Benedict College. Her dedication to learning and self-improvement remained evident throughout her life.
From an early age, Sarah discovered a passion for sewing after learning from her mother. What began as a childhood interest blossomed into a remarkable talent. While attending high school, she honed her skills under the guidance of her beloved Home Economics teachers, the late Mrs. J.F. White and Ms. Eva Grant, quickly becoming one of their most gifted students. Her talent and creativity led her to teach adult education sewing classes for Florence School District One for seven years. For decades, family members and friends lovingly relied on Sarah to create, tailor, and alter garments with unmatched care and skill. Sarah was also a trailblazer whose professional accomplishments opened doors for others. She became the first African American machinist hired at the former Florence Manufacturing Company, where she faithfully worked for twelve years and helped create opportunities for other African Americans within the company. Her pioneering spirit continued when she joined General Electric (G.E.), becoming the first female welder in the Florence, SC location. Sarah took tremendous pride in her work and deeply valued the friendships and experiences she gained throughout her 31-year career before retiring in 2006 from G.E.
Faith was the cornerstone of Sarah's life. She was a long-time faithful, dedicated, and sincere member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she served wholeheartedly in many capacities during the years. As a young member, she participated in the youth choir, Girl Scouts, Young Women Missionary Association, and numerous church committees. Later, she faithfully served as Chairperson of the Culinary Ministry and as a Unit Leader and Treasurer for the Trinity Baptist Church Credit Union. Her service reflected her servant's heart and unwavering commitment to her church family.
Sarah possessed a warm spirit that drew people to her everywhere she went. She never met a stranger and found joy in conversation, fellowship, and helping others. Whether delivering meals, assisting with medications, providing transportation to doctor appointments, or simply offering encouragement, Sarah consistently put the needs of others before her own. She lovingly cared for many family members and friends, including her late sister, Elizabeth, with patience, compassion, and devotion.
Her love for her alma mater remained strong throughout her life. Sarah devoted countless hours to the Wilson High School Class of 1964 and the Wilson High School Alumni Association, serving faithfully in numerous leadership and support roles. Cooking and baking were among her greatest joys, and she was often found leading the hors d'oeuvres and dinner committees for alumni gatherings and special events. Many knew and loved Sarah for her famous pound cake, prepared with the same warmth and care she poured into everything she did. At the time of her passing, she faithfully served as Treasurer for the Class of 1964. Sarah's loyalty and dedication to Wilson High School spoke volumes about her character and commitment to preserving fellowship and community. Sarah was inducted into the Wilson High School Hall of Fame in 2024.
Sarah leaves behind to cherish her precious memory, her loving and caring sister, Evelyn Muldrow of Columbia, SC; devoted nephew, Terrance L. Thomas of Dallas, TX; grand-niece and goddaughter, Taliah Elizabeth Thomas of Columbia, SC; grand-nephew, Quentin Earl Thomas and grand-niece, Ella Jean Thomas of Dallas, TX; her devoted partner, Larry Samuel of Darlington, SC; cousins, Jean Ann Zollicoffer of Florence, SC and Frances Walters of Irmo, SC, who lovingly assisted with her care; goddaughters, Andrea Daniels of Florence, SC and Thema Davis of Raleigh, NC; a host of relatives, friends, and community members.
She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved sister, Elizabeth Muldrow.
Sarah's life was a beautiful testimony of faith, perseverance, compassion, and service. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and selflessness that will continue to inspire generations to come. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
