Mrs. Beatrice Newton was born on July 30, 1940, in Florence, SC to the late Armstrong “Tuck” Pickens and Birlee J. Pickens. On Friday, May 26, 2023, she was called into eternal rest at the McLeod Hospice House, Florence SC.
Pat as she was affectionally called was educated in Florence Public School System. She left the South in search of a better life, living in New York, Connecticut, and North Carolina before settling in Baltimore, Maryland. It was in Baltimore she found her true calling as a teacher’s assistant for the NW Day Care Center. She demonstrated her love for teaching and nurturing young children. The children and their parents loved and respected her. The program was an innovative new concept for the community and it received a great amount of attention. WJZ television station sent a news reporter Oprah Winfrey out to do a simulcast about the center. It was a day for the Center and Miss Pat rubbing shoulders with Oprah Winfrey. In 2005 Pat retired from the Baltimore City daycare program and moved back to Florence to care for her mother. She enjoyed working in her flowers, feeding the stray cats, and interacting with her neighbors. Pat loved the Lord and enjoyed spending time reading the bible. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 91. Pat joined the Majority Baptist Church where she fellowshipped until her health declined. She enjoyed helping those who were less fortunate and financially supported them.
Pat left her footprints on the hearts and minds of all those she encountered, children, their parents, her family, and her community.
Pat was proceeded in death by her parents, her sister Dorothy Marie Poston, brothers David “June” Pickens, and Henry A. McKnight, and a niece Yvonne “Princess” Goodman.
Those left to cherish her loving memories are her nephews who she reared as her own Chardon Green of Baltimore, MD and Jamarko Goodman of Columbus, GA; sisters Bertha Comer of Lake City, SC, Helen Butler of Effingham, SC and Magalene Mathew of Florence, SC; brothers Jerome Pickens of Effingham, SC and Willie (Gwen) Pickens of Lake City, SC; nieces Carietha Jackson and Yvonne Cannon both of Florence, SC; nephew Eric Poston of Baltimore, MD who served as caregivers; godson Braxton Flemming of Florence, SC; Pat leaves a myriad of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
