Benjamin Spears was the fourth child born to Kenneth and Mamie Ruth Williams Spears on May 9, 1951 in Florence County. He departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 15, 2026.
He attended Gibbs School in Pamplico, SC before later transferring to Wilson Junior High School and graduating from the illustrious Wilson Senior High School in 1969 where he developed a special interest in automotive mechanics.Upon graduation, Benjamin enlisted in the United States Army where he served in Vietnam as well as completed a tour in Germany. When he returned to the states, he began working alongside his brother, Odell Spears with Spears Masonry, where he quickly mastered brick masonry skills and became site foreman.
He was united in holy matrimony with Margie Ellison Spears and from that union, his one and only son, Marcus Tremayne was born. The following year he began employment with Stone Container, now West Rock where he was gainfully employed for forty-five years and retired. After the untimely transition of his wife, Margie, Benjamin again found love with Judith Duncan Spears, whom he was married to for twenty-five years. From their union came two daughters, NaKetra and Monica.
Some of Benjamin’s hobbies included hunting and fishing, an admiration for cars and trucks, long car rides, watching Western shows on TV and grilling. He had an incredible sense of humor, with the ability to mimic anyone that he met. He was known for his many witty sayings and for being a consistent, loving, supportive and devoted father to his children and grandchildren. He also loved watching movies while feasting on Dubai chocolate and milkshakes.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Kenneth and Mamie Ruth Spears and grandson, Zahmir Noah.
He leaves beautiful memories and a lifetime full of laughter and love with his children, Marcus T. (Thavy) Spears of Troutman, NC, NaKetra A. Spears of Florence, SC, devoted caregiver Monica E. Spears of Florence, SC; grandchildren, Kaleb Andrew Martin, Keelin Zahir McKay, Braylon Benjamin Spears and Houston Bryn Spears; siblings devoted brother Kenneth (Yvonne) Spears, Jr., Odell (Joan) Spears, Anthony (Mary) Spears, Sr., Lishie Nowlin and Jocerlyn (Boice) Hardy; special aunt/cousin Rose Sneed; special friends, cousin James Eagleton, Quince McAllister and Darby Thomas; nurse and caregiver, Valerie McCoy; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.
