Coach Jesse Barber Obituary

Jesse Barber, born on June 5, 1951, in Chester, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2024, in Charleston, South Carolina. He was the cherished son of JC Barber and Estelle Virginia Jones Barber, who have welcomed him home in heaven.

Jesse was also preceded in death by his loving maternal grandparents, Tom Jones and Janie Brown Jones, and paternal grandparents, Jesse Barber and Lizzie Barber.

Jesse’s life was a beautiful testament to faith, family, and service. A proud graduate of Lewisville High School in 1969, he pursued his passion for learning and earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology from South Carolina State University in 1976. Before embarking on his academic journey, Jesse honorably served his country as an Army Ranger in the United States Army from 1969 to 1972, exemplifying courage, discipline, and dedication.

Jesse was one of six beloved children, sharing a lifetime of memories with his sisters: Lottie Stinson, Roberta Collins, Flora Barber, and Mary Barber, as well as his brother Samuel Barber (LaRita) and his late brother, William “Bill” Sterling.

On May 15, 1976, Jesse married his soulmate, Sandra Rosemary Walker. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and purpose. They raised three devoted sons: Kevin Michael (Casey) Barber, Patrick Ryan (Danielle) Barber, and Brian Walker  (Germani) Barber. Jesse’s greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren, Freddie "Ty" Ervin III, De'Andrez Barber, Jailen Barber, Ryan Barber, Kayla Barber, and Kevin Barber, Jr. each of whom he adored unconditionally. As their biggest  cheerleader, Jesse never missed an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments, milestones, and dreams. In addition to his immediate family, Jesse is cherished by his devoted sisters-in-law, Linda Walker and Patricia (Oliver) Frazier. He will also be fondly remembered by his beloved nieces, Denice Love, Christina Fultz, Chastie Collins, Olivia Stinson, and Stephany Myers; his nephews, Damon Stinson, Joel Love, Elwood T. Collins III, Julian Barber, Jordan Barber,  Tyler Fisher, and the late Matthew Stinson; along with a host of extended family, friends, and colleagues.

Jesse’s passion for mentoring extended beyond his family. As a dedicated coach, he left an indelible mark on countless young athletes in his community. He coached Little League Football for the Darlington County Recreation Department, JV Girls Basketball, Varsity Girls Basketball, and Varsity Girls Track at Darlington High School, earning the prestigious Region Coach of the Year award five times. He continued to inspire players at Wilson High School and coached basketball for Cumberland United Methodist Church.

Beyond coaching, Jesse was a tireless advocate for community progress and well-being. He served as a member of the Task Force for Progress for Darlington County, Chairman of the Board for Pee Dee Healthy Start, and Chairman of the Board for Agapé Placement, Inc. His work in these roles demonstrated his deep commitment to creating opportunities, supporting families, and improving lives in the region. In 1995, Jesse played a pivotal role as one of the plaintiffs in the landmark lawsuit that brought about the desegregation of Darlington schools. This significant legal action led to the establishment of Mayo High School for Math, Science, and Technology, as well as the creation of Darlington High School and Darlington Middle School.

Faith was the cornerstone of Jesse’s life. He was a devoted member of Mt. Moriah AME Zion Church and later worshiped at Cumberland United Methodist Church in Florence, SC. His spiritual devotion guided his actions, relationships, and unwavering commitment to serving others.

Jesse will forever be remembered for his kind heart, visionary leadership, and steadfast love for his family and community. His legacy of faith, compassion, and service lives on in the countless lives he touched.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:23)
