Gladys James Moses Obituary

On October 26, 1953, Gladys Moses was born in Florence, South Carolina. She was affectionately known as “Nan” to her family and friends and “Mema” to her great grands. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Marie Ruth James, both of Florence, South Carolina. On May 8, 2025, after a brief illness, Gladys entered into eternal rest surrounded by her loved ones.


Ms. Gladys was a graduate of Wilson High School. She worked as a seamstress at A Stitch In Time in Florence, South Carolina until she retired.


Ms. Gladys was cherished by many and a beloved mother, sister, aunt cousin friend, and companion. Ms. Gladys was baptized at an early age where she served and was a faithful disciple at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. She was a part of the kitchen ministry and participated on the pastor support ministry as a dedicated member fulfilling her assigned role giving exceptional hospitality to her pastor, leaders, and community. She had a passion for serving.


Ms. Gladys loved cooking for her family and friends. She loved feeding the neighborhood. She was known for making the best chicken salad. Ms. Gladys loved traveling and having a good time with family and friends.


In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by two sisters Virginia James and Lilly Bell James, seven brothers Wilbert Jr., Don, Jon, Jimmy Lee, Roy Lee, Willie George and Leroy (Ricky) James, her aunt Beatrice Rorie, her niece Shirley Ann Hudson, nephews Sammie Taylor, and Nakia Montrell (Papa) James. 


Ms. Moses leads to cherish her children Connie (John) Simmons and Latashia (Marlon) Williams of Tennessee; eleven grandchildren Carmen James and Courtnie (Connor) Harris both of Georgia, Bryan Alston of North Carolina, Corsica James, Brytnie Deas, Faithe Deas, Hope Deas, Joye Deas, Caliyha Simmons, Sammie J. Deas, III all of Tennessee, and Chyna Simmons; ten great grands Je’Zhara, Andrea’Marie, Sammya, Kerris, Jameson, Saniyah, Allison, Connor Jr., Sencere, and Kairo; her companion John Bines; three sisters Beatrice Taylor, Betty James and Mary (Archie) Gray of Enoree, SC; one brother Melvin James; two sisters-in-law Gloria James and  Linda James; three god-children Tamara (Jamel) Lyde, Orlando (Angela) James, and Reilyn Bacote; the Robinson family as her god sisters and brothers; best friends Emma Prescott and Harriet Waiters; special aunt and uncle Harold “Budd” (Angie) King; a host of other family and friends.
