Joenathan Johnson Jr. Obituary
Joenathan Johnson Jr. was born on December 4, 1947, in Florence County, South Carolina, to the late Joenathan Johnson Sr. and Edith Swinton Johnson. Affectionately known to many as “Little Joe,” he lived a life marked by faith, service, dedication, and love. Joenathan peacefully departed this earthly life on Friday, April 24, 2026, at his home in Timmonsville, South Carolina.
Joenathan received his education in the public schools of Florence County and was a proud graduate of Wilson High School, “Legendary Class of 1966.” Shortly after graduation, he answered his country’s call and was drafted into the United States Army. A proud and decorated veteran, Joenathan served with honor and distinction during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970. Assigned to the 2nd Platoon, Company E, 4th Battalion, 1st Brigade of the renowned 82nd Airborne Division, he rose to the rank of Sergeant. For his exceptional bravery, valor, and dedication to duty, he received numerous commendations, including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device, the Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device, the Air Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. His military service stood as a lifelong source of pride to him and to all who knew him. Following his honorable discharge, Joenathan was diagnosed with PTSD after relocating to Washington, D.C. During his years in the nation’s capital, he worked at the historic Eastern Market and later as a concrete truck driver for more than eight years. After returning home to Florence County, he continued his career as a truck driver with Southeastern Freight Lines, where he faithfully served for twenty-five years before retiring.
Joenathan later found lasting love and companionship when he married Marlene Cusaac Johnson. Together, they shared a strong and devoted union of thirty-four years filled with travel, adventure, and treasured time spent with family and friends. Their journey together was one of deep love, partnership, and enduring commitment.
A man of faith from a young age, Joenathan accepted Christ early in life and was baptized at Savannah Grove Baptist Church, where he remained a lifelong and active member. He faithfully served the church as an Emeritus Deacon, previously serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board, and was also a member of the Savannah Grove Men’s Choir.
Known throughout the community for his many passions, Joenathan was an accomplished athlete, enjoying baseball and softball, and was a loyal Washington Commanders (Redskins) superfan. He was also a true culinary talent—an outstanding cook and master griller. His signature barbecue sauce was legendary, and many would agree his chicken bog was “the best thing since sliced bread,” bringing family and friends together around the table with love and laughter. In addition, he was an avid motorcycle and car enthusiast, as well as a fan of NASCAR and drag racing, bringing joy and camaraderie with close cousins and lifelong friends.
