Raised by her paternal grandparents in Sumter, South Carolina, Barbara received her education through the Sumter School System.
Mother Doughty was a beacon of love and devotion, cherishing her family and friends. Her unwavering faith in the Lord brought her immense joy, especially through her love for singing and serving God.
In 1964, she moved to Norwalk, Connecticut, with her husband, John Thomas Doughty Sr. There, she became an integral part of Little Zion Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, where she received the gift of the Holy Ghost and was baptized. Their bond, forged over 59 years, included shared prayers, shopping trips, and Sunday dinners at Mother Doughty’s home before evening services. Throughout her time at Little Zion, she served as a choir director, usher, and kitchen worker, embodying the spirit of service. Later, she relocated to South Carolina to care for her ailing grandparents. Mother Doughty dedicated 15 years of her life to Home Depot in Charlotte, North Carolina, before moving to Florence, South Carolina, where she became a cherished member of Greater Gethsemane Apostolic Church in 2016 under the leadership of Bishop Kenneth J. Swaringer. There, she served on the mother board and in the senior choir, continuing her legacy of faith and community.
Mother Barbara Doughty was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Thomas Doughty Sr., two daughters Cynthia Darcel Nettles and Sherry Ann Moten.
She leaves behind her only son, John Thomas Doughty Jr. of Washington State; three daughters, Sabrina Yvette Doughty of Darlington, South Carolina, Sonia Suzette (Greg) Spencer of Kannapolis, North Carolina, and Tonia Juliet McCullom of Washington State; eleven grandchildren Rodrick (Majeedah) Richardson, Jequana Moten, Christina Moten, Tiffany (James) Hunt, Arthur (LeAnne) Sanders, Quayor Sanders, Jamaal Doughty, Aaron Graf, Ashley Graf, and Xavier Doughty; five great-grandchildren; one aunt Mary Felix of Atlanta, Georgia; a special cousin Joe Moten of Charleston, South Carolina; two goddaughters Tara Tyson-McMillan and Cherelle McMillan of New Haven, Connecticut, along with a host of cousins and friends.
