Oscar Taylor Obituary

Born in New York, New York, and raised in Darlington, South Carolina, Oscar Taylor departed this life  leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and strength. He was born on October 26, 1958, to Mary L. Taylor and James W. Taylor, and was the youngest of seven children—a proud place in his family that he SO cherished deeply.

Though his spiritual journey began early, Oscar Taylor was born again and saved in his youth at Bethel AME Church in Darlington, SC. While not an active church member later in life, he never wavered in his belief in God and in Christ our Savior.

Raised by his loving grandparents Costola and Nathan Bacote, Oscar Taylor was nurtured in a home full of care, love and strong values that shaped the man he became.

A proud graduate of Mayo High School, Class of 1976, Oscar, was a gifted and dedicated athlete. He played football, basketball, and ran track, where he made a name for himself as a gifted athlete—his passion for sports carried him to Salisbury College, where he continued to play football at the collegiate level. Because of his powerful presence and standout talent on the field, he earned the nickname "The Big O" in high school-a name that stuck with him, honoring the dynamic and unforgettable football player he was. His love for sports remained a lifelong passion-especially his unwavering devotion to the Dallas Cowboys. He was more than a fan-he was a die-hard Cowboy, in every essence. Oscar spent his entire professional life serving and mentoring youth. For over forty-three years, he worked as a Recreational Specialist with the Agency of Parks and Recreation in Washington, D.C. Through his role with the Department of  Recreation, he touched countless lives, guiding, coaching, and inspiring generations of young people. He loved kids deeply and poured his heart into kids of all ages. Never having any kids of his own but being a father figure to MANY!!!  Above all, OUR SUPERMAN Oscar Taylor, will be remembered for his infectious laughter, incredible sense of humor, and the joy he brought to everyone he touched. To his family and so many others, he was more than a brother, uncle, or friend—he was OUR hero.

Though he may be gone from our sight, his love, laughter, and legacy will live on forever in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Deborah (Earl) Ballentine, Chris Taylor, Robert Taylor, and nephews Sidique Taylor and Syeir Ballentine.

He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings Opal Taylor, (whom he shares many of laughs with),

Jacqueline (Ernie) Golden, LaRue (Jeffery) Bonner; VERY special nieces Kenshausha (Demetrius ) Brown, India Taylor, Cashay (Marquis) Fleming; Debbie (Joshua) Odenore; five nephews Derrick Golden, Samoura Taylor, Sokoto Ballentine, Shabazz Bonner and Eric Golden; his best friend and life companion Wanda Shepherd; dear friends Wally, Sheila Milton, and Latanya McFarland; special goddaughter Markivia Bailey whom he adored; he is also remembered by a host of additional nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and close friends who will forever carry his legacy in their hearts. Though he may have been the seventh child, he was first in the hearts of many. His legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to live on in every life he touched.
