Shaunyetta Alston Obituary

Shaunyetta Janelle Alston was born in Florence County to Ms. Janet Alston and Mr. Amos Cyrus on May 30, 1983. She entered into eternal rest on February 16, 2024.

She was a graduate of Johnsonville High School Class of 2001. Upon graduation she continued her education at Claflin University with a Bachelor of Art in Health and physical education.

Shaunyetta Janelle “Nell” Alston was a multi-sport athlete, a respected Coach, living warrior but most of all a loving mother.  She was a kind soul who loved her family dearly.  Her strength was like no other and it indeed inspired many. She loved all of her athletes and became more than a coach to them. One of her favorite quotes was “Giving Up Is Not An Option”!

Shaunyetta became a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Church at an early age. She was very active in her church but one thing she loved more than  anything was singing. She was a member of the St. Mark Inspirational Mass Choir among many other things. A servant she was. Shaunyetta believed with all her heart, God was her provider, protector, and her healer. Her faith was even stronger than her fight.

Shaunyetta was employed with Florence School District #5 until she became ill as Johnsonville High School Head Basketball and Volleyball Coach and Assistant Coach for Track and Field. She was recently inducted to Johnsonville’s High School Hall of Fame. Her previous employment included Southside High School as Special Education Aide, the Assistant Girls Basketball Coach with a 3A State Championship, Assistant and Head Track and Field Coach with a 2A Girls 4 x 4 State Championship, at Lakeview Middle School as the Career Development Facilitator and Greenville City Recreation Department. Her career was her passion.

She leaves to cherish her memories a beautiful daughter, Noah Taylen Simpkins, caring mother Janet Alston; father Amos Cyrus; a very loving maternal grandmother Flory G. Alston; sisters Jessica and Teisha, brothers Troy, Christopher, Lamont, Ron, Amos Jr, and Shamar; aunts and uncles Jimmy Alston, Jacqueline (Ellerbe Jr.) Woodberry, Earl (Kimberly) Alston, Corey (Latonya Timmons)  Alston, Deloris, Edward, Joe, Jerry Cyrus, and Ethaline McCutcheon; bonus children AaDen Woodberry, Asia Woodberry and Darrel “DJ” Woodberry, Jr.; Noah’s nanna Susie M. Hemingway; two special  loving sisters Sherrill Green and LaToya Woodberry; a loving partner of 20 years Thaddeu (TJ) Simpkins affectionally known as Stank; special friends Joyce Robinson-Nash, Felicia Walters, Kimberly B. Woodberry, De’Shae Furgess and Latima Hanna; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and family and friends.
